How to Use the Gaston County Inmate Inquiry
The Gaston County inmate inquiry is a free public portal powered by New World Systems and linked from the Sheriff's Office site. No login is required. The footer states that the search only includes bookings from the current year and two years prior. That limit matters: an older booking will not appear, and a no-result search does not prove a person was never in custody.
Before you start, have a last name or a booking number ready. If you are not sure where the person is held, leave the housing facility set to all facilities.
- Open the inmate inquiry from the Sheriff's Office website.
- Enter at least one field, usually a last name.
- Use "Today's Bookings" to see people booked that day.
- Keep Housing Facility on all facilities if you are unsure of the location.
- Click Search, then open a result to view the profile.
The Sheriff's Office home page links the inmate search along with visitation, phone, and contact details.

From there, the inmate inquiry opens the actual search form described below.
Gaston County Inmate Search Fields
The inmate inquiry groups its search fields under a "Search by" heading. You can search several ways, which helps when you only know part of a name or a date range. The table below lists the fields confirmed in the public form.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | No | Recommended starting field. |
| First Name | Text | No | Narrows common last names. |
| Global Subject Number | Text | No | Local inmate identifier, also used for mail. |
| Booking Number | Text | No | Specific to one booking. |
| Booking From / To Date | Date | No | Date picker for a booking range. |
| Housing Facility | Dropdown | No | All Facilities, Gaston County Jail Main, or Jail Annex. |
The form's buttons are Search, Reset, and Today's Bookings. The inmate inquiry screen shows these fields in practice.

Use at least one field, then click Search. If the person was booked today, "Today's Bookings" is the quickest route.
What a Gaston County Inmate Profile Shows
A result opens a profile with booking details. The exact layout should be confirmed in the live portal, but the Sheriff's search and mail procedures confirm the core fields. The table below shows what a public inmate profile typically includes.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | The booked person's full name. |
| Global Subject Number | The identifier used for mail and accounts. |
| Booking Number | Reference for the specific booking. |
| Booking Date | When the person was booked into the jail. |
| Housing Facility | Main Jail or Jail Annex. |
| Charges and Bond | Charges logged at intake and any bond amount. |
Medical, mental health, and security classification notes are not published. If the inmate identifier is unknown, the Sheriff says it is found on the profile as the Global Subject Number.

The Sheriff's Office operates the county detention function from the complex on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The inmate inquiry separates the Main Jail and the Jail Annex, and the visitation schedules differ by housing group. The contact cards below give the official numbers for custody questions.

Gaston County Jail Visitation Schedule
Visits at the Gaston County jail are video visits. You register at the Annex lobby or through ICSolutions by selecting Gaston County Jail. Visits must be scheduled the day before or up to two weeks in advance, and each visit lasts 25 minutes. The schedule below comes from the Sheriff's visitation page.
| Housing Group | Onsite | Remote |
|---|---|---|
| General Population Main Jail | Mon-Thu 1:05 PM-3:35 PM and 5:05 PM-8:00 PM | Mon-Sun 1:05 PM-3:35 PM and 5:05 PM-8:00 PM |
| General Population Annex | Mon-Thu 1:05 PM-9:05 PM | Mon-Sun 1:05 PM-9:05 PM |
| Closed / Protective Custody | Mon-Thu 1:05 PM-3:35 PM and 5:05 PM-8:00 PM | Onsite only |
Each inmate gets one visit per week, with up to four visitors per onsite visit and only two in the area at once. Remote visits need at least $7.50 in an ICSolutions prepaid account. Visitors should arrive 15 minutes early with valid government photo ID.

Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and all visits are monitored and recorded.
Sending Mail to a Gaston County Inmate
Inmate mail changed on March 1, 2024. Nonlegal correspondence is now scanned and delivered electronically to inmate tablets. The counterintuitive part is the address. Ordinary letters do not go to the Gastonia jail. They go to a scanning center in Maryland.
Address regular mail as follows:
Inmate Mail Address
Gaston County Jail
Inmate Name, Inmate Identifier
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
The return address must include the sender's full first and last name, not initials. Mail addressed incorrectly may be returned. The inmate identifier is the Global Subject Number from the profile, or you can get it from Jail Information at 704-869-6868. Legal mail may be opened in the inmate's presence to check for contraband. Banned items include explicit photos, gang material, perfume on the paper, paperclips, glued contents, profanity on the envelope, and anything describing escape or crime plans.
Families and friends can also exchange digital messages with inmates online or through the Getting Out mobile app. That option is separate from physical mail and is handled through the jail's tablet system.
Inmate Phone Calls
The jail phone system is run by ICSolutions. When an inmate calls, the system announces a call from Gaston County Jail. The recipient can accept, refuse, or block. Pressing 5 accepts the call, and a first 60-second call is free one time per inmate per number. After that, the recipient sets up an account.
Calls have a maximum length of 15 minutes, with a prompt at 14 minutes. Prepaid accounts can be set up online, by phone at 1-888-506-8407, or by mail to ICSolutions in San Antonio, Texas. All calls are monitored and recorded. The Sheriff's phone-system page covers the setup steps.

Avoid three-way calls, call forwarding, and keypad presses after connecting, since the system may drop the call. Customer service is available 24 hours a day. The jail is also set up for debit calling, which lets an inmate buy minutes from commissary funds and place a call announced at no cost to the recipient, though the recipient still has to accept it.
A recipient who blocks an inmate will not get calls from that person until a facility administrator removes the block. Keep your prepaid balance funded if you expect regular calls, because a call cannot connect on an empty account.
Adding Money and Commissary
Inmate funds and phone money are two different things. The Sheriff says inmate financial transactions are handled by Tech Friends, with kiosks in the Sheriff's main lobby and the Jail Annex lobby. You can also add funds online through InmateCanteen.
Commissary or trust funds let an inmate buy items inside the jail, including phone minutes through debit calling. That is separate from the ICSolutions prepaid phone account a recipient sets up on their own line. The InmateCanteen portal handles online deposits.

Keep your deposit confirmation, since transfers can take time to post to the inmate's account. Commissary lets an inmate buy approved snacks, hygiene items, and writing supplies, which is why many families add a small balance early. Confirm current deposit limits and any fees with the provider before you send a large amount.
Booking and Bond at the Gaston County Jail
After an arrest, a person is brought to the jail and booked. Booking includes a photo, fingerprints, a search, and a classification step that decides housing. The person is then taken before a magistrate or judicial officer, who can set bond and conditions of release where the law allows. The Sheriff does not publish a step-by-step booking timeline, so how long this takes depends on the charge and the caseload.
Bond can take several forms. It may be a money amount, a secured or unsecured promise, or a written promise to appear. A bail bondsman, called a surety, can post a money bond for a fee. Once bond is met and processing is done, the person is released, though the release may not show online right away. For urgent custody or bond questions, call jail information at 704-869-6868 during weekday hours, or the Sheriff's main line at 704-869-6800.
Visitation Rules and Dress Code
The Sheriff enforces clear rules for video visits, and not knowing them is not an excuse. Visitors must dress appropriately and follow staff directions. The list below covers the main rules to plan around.
- No skin-tight or form-fitting clothing, tank tops, low-cut shirts, or short skirts and shorts.
- No gang symbols, colors, vulgar images, hats, or see-through clothing.
- No cameras, recorders, purses, bags, wallets, cell phones, or electronic devices in the visit area.
- No taking pictures of inmates during onsite or online video visits.
- Visitors under the influence or causing a disruption can lose visiting privileges.
Staff may deny, change, or cancel a visit. Holidays and safety or security needs can also alter the schedule, so confirm before you travel.
County Jail vs State Prison
The Sheriff inmate inquiry covers the county jail only. It does not cover state prison, probation, or parole. For someone sentenced to state prison or under state supervision, use the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offender search. For federal inmates, use the BOP locator. For release alerts, register with VINELink, which sends notifications by phone, email, text, or TTY.
This split confuses many searchers. A person arrested last night in Gastonia appears in the Sheriff's roster, not in the state system, while someone who finished a county case months ago and went to prison shows in the state offender search instead. Matching the person's situation to the right database saves time.
For people no longer in county custody, see Gaston County released inmates. For jail capacity and population data, see inmate population. If an arrest led to charges, follow the case in court records.
When the Inmate Search Shows No Result
A blank result has several possible meanings. The booking may be older than the two-year window. The person may have been released. They may be held in another county, in state prison, or in federal custody. The search may also simply need a different spelling or the person's legal name rather than a nickname.
Note: A no-result Gaston County inmate search does not prove someone was never booked, so call jail information at 704-869-6868 to confirm.
